This February, Consonare Choral Community has been celebrating the richness and variety of choral music through sharing recordings each Friday for a new project called: Choir Forward Fridays. Each week, we have shared recordings of songs from Voices of Concinnity's live performance this past October. This performance was the first inside and in-person performance for the ensemble since February of 2020, which is the reason Concinnity is performing in face masks. But, the beauty and variety of the repertoire still shines through and we are pleased to share these videos virtually on our website and YouTube Channel with you.
There is some truly incredible choral music out there and the time has come to discover its wealth and beauty, as well as the composers who are bringing communal singing to life. Choral music in the Western European tradition has deeply rooted in recreating the music of the great composers; however, the choral music we all know well is only a small representation of the music within our reach. Voices of Concinnity has a mission of exploring representation in the choral works they present and perform. This choice to explore new music has enriched the musical experience of the singers and the audience, who when asked to express that which they enjoyed most at our concerts: variety.
February is Black History Month; thus, we have included composers to help honor the acknowledgement, recognition, and celebration of the contributions of African Americans.
Therefore, each Friday this February, we have shared one or two videos on our website, with the text of each song and links to the composers of each of these works. We have included these links for you to discover even more music by these composers, with music educators and choral directors specifically in mind. February is Black History Month; thus, we have included composers to help honor the acknowledgement, recognition, and celebration of the contributions of African Americans. Voices of Concinnity has enjoyed singing these works and we want to share them with you for this special project, #choirforwardfriday.
Here is one of the songs by Undine Smith Moore, which is an arrangement of a Negro spiritual called "We shall walk through the valley in peace." Join us on our #choirforwardfriday page by clicking the button below - you can explore the songs posted earlier this month and eagerly await the final videos to be released today and next Friday. Enjoy the music and share with your friends and colleagues. The music is out there and we need only discover its essence and share its beauty.
